Workshop: Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol

To begin our week learning about the SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) Model, we first explored the history of bilingual education in the United States. Having a deep understanding of the history of language education in your country allows you to better understand your students and their cultures.

A better understanding of this history allowed the group to see why the SIOP Model is both very helpful and very necessary when planning lessons for ESL students. Our exploration of SIOP will provide new methods and techniques to implement in lessons and lesson planning when the teachers return to Brazil.

Here are the instruction make the 8-flap foldable we made together in class. Perhaps you could use it in your classroom to explain the 8 parts of speech in English!

Fun with foldables!!!!

During the week, we taught the group how to use the SIOP Method by using the SIOP Method. The came up with these great visual representations of each of the steps of the SIOP Method.

For their final assessment, the teachers were asked to teach mock lessons to the class, using the right components of SIOP and focusing on the four language domains: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
